This policy explains what Margin ("Margin", "the app") does and does not do with your information. It is written in plain language.
Information we collect
Margin does not collect personal data. There is no account and no sign-in, and the developer does not receive, store, or retain information about you. Some data is used only on your device, and only with your permission:
- Reminders (Apple Reminders via EventKit)
- Calendar events (Apple Calendar via EventKit)
- The text you type for capture
- BYOK AI API key (stored in macOS Keychain)
What Margin does not do
- No accounts and no sign-in
- No advertising
- No analytics, telemetry, or tracking
- Nothing sold or shared for advertising, ever
Network access
None by default. The app makes a network request only if you opt into the AI fallback by enabling AI and supplying your own API key, base URL, and model. In that case it sends the single sentence you typed (plus the current date and your list names, for context) to the OpenAI-compatible endpoint you configured. The default base URL is https://api.openai.com/v1, but you can point it at any compatible provider. No other servers are contacted.
Bring your own key. The API key is stored in the macOS Keychain (generic password, service com.margin.Margin, accessible only when the device is unlocked), never in UserDefaults or plain text. The base URL and model name are stored in app preferences. The key is sent only as a Bearer token to the endpoint you configure.
Margin has no advertising, no analytics, and no third-party tracking.
Third-party services
The following may be involved, and only for the purposes above:
- Only the AI provider you choose to configure (for example OpenAI), and only when you enable the optional AI fallback. No provider is contacted otherwise.
Data retention
Because the developer never receives your data, there is nothing for the developer to retain. Your content and settings remain on your device until you remove them or uninstall the app.
Your choices
You control any permission the app requests in System Settings → Privacy & Security, and you can change or revoke it at any time. Denying a permission only disables the related feature; the rest of the app keeps working.
Children’s privacy
Margin is a general-audience utility. It does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date above will be updated. Material changes will appear here before they take effect.
